A.R. Rahman - Chaiyya Chaiyya

I picked the song of the day for a couple of days for a Phish Facebook group I’m in so figured I would upload the selections to Fink’s Travels.

A.R. Rahman
Chaiyya Chaiyya
Soundtrack for Dil Se.. (translated to From The Heart)
1998

Picking the song of the day is so much harder than I thought it would be! Not because I don’t have a ton of good music at my fingertips, rather because of the fine group of music loving freaks in this group. One of the benefits of being a Phish fan is that they have introduced me to so much amazing music.... in this instance a lot of those nuggets are already known by y’all because we are members of the same Temple. For example I thought about making something from the 1977 Prince Loring Park Sessions the SOD. However I figured most of you have already heard Prince lay down the funk at 19 years old because somehow that album has made its way around the phish community. If by chance you haven’t, do yourself a HUGE favor and check out the link in the comments below. It is my favorite album to listen to post-phish. Sidebar: When on tour I do not like to listen to any Phish. I’m firmly in the camp of don’t listen to the artist you are going to see in concert on the same day.

I recognize I’m probably sneaking an extra song (actually an entire album - ha!) into my week of song of the day selections, however I started this whole thing mid week so I’m giving myself some leeway on the extra SOD.

For today’s selection I’m going to attempt to introduce a song I love but didn’t discover through Phish and will hopefully be new to some of you. That’s weird to say about a song that is ranked #9 on a list of the ten most popular songs of all time, however that was a worldwide list conducted by the BBC and voted on by people in 155 countries. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up being US ethnocentric but the world is a big place and there is great music everywhere.

I heard a remix of Chaiyya Chaiyya open the movie Inside Man and became obsessed with the song and A.R. Rahman. A.R. Rhaman’s wallet says Bad Motherfucker on it. He is the top music director of Bollywood, a world renowned composer, singer-songwriter and producer. He’s won countless awards including Grammys, golden globes, national film and Academy awards. In 2009 he was included on Time’s list of the top 100 most influential people in the world. He is known as the Mozart of Madras.

Chaiyya Chaiyya was originally featured in a movie, the music video became a cult classic in part because it was filmed on a moving train. The YouTube version I have linked to this song below is that music video. Not only worth a listen, worth a watch. Enjoy!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
