Jerry Garcia

Happy hump day Sanity!

A question posed in our circles…. Which came first for you, Phish or the Grateful Dead? Presumably for the majority of the 3.0 folks Phish was the gateway to the Dead. On the other hand I am guessing that the majority of the 1.0 phans (us olds) started with the Dead and then came over to Phish. My OG college crew, to this day some of my best friends in the world that I still tour with (in fact will be in Mexico with a few) were hardcore Deadheads in college and then got on the P-train. They were (and would argue still are) much cooler than I was.  It would be hard for me to disagree; I was pretty square working two jobs and busting my ass in school. Fun Fink Fact: I gave the commencement speech at the business school graduation. Not because I had the best grades (although they were pretty spectacular) but because my classmates voted on me to be the speaker.

For me it was actually Widespread Panic -> Phish -> Grateful Dead. While I was lucky enough to catch The Grateful Dead a handful of times in college (always at the Omni in Atlanta), I didn’t get IT. Much like Phish for me in the early days it was much more of a party and spectacle than the religious/community experience it became. Fortunately I got IT early enough for Phish. Unfortunately I didn’t get the Dead until after Jerry had died. Quick thought about getting IT... I know people that have been to hundreds of shows that still don’t get IT. On the other hand I know some people that get IT almost immediately. It isn’t a show count, it’s a vibe, a feeling, an understanding.

Anyway the older I get the more in love with the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia I become. Since the pandemic began it has been what I have listened to the most by multiples. It is just so comforting. Previously when I hosted SSOD the theme was the Grateful Dead. As such, I am not going to entirely repeat everything however my musical Mt. Rushmore definitely has a place for Jer Bear, so I had to include some Jerry.

I have been diving deep into the side projects, especially JGB and Legion of Mary. I recommend going down the Jerry Church hole on youtube next time you are looking for some deeper Jerry shows. Once again am not going to be turning many onto new music today (hopefully tomorrow), however I do want add some Jerry side project tunes to the playlist so here are a few of my favorites.

Enjoy.

After Midnight -> Eleanor Rigby -> After Midnight

Today’s photo was my Halloween costume from this year. I created an alter ego Madame Monsieur Judi Leonard Jackson Funkenberg, they/them of the great city of New Orleans Louisiana. Renaissance human, magician, life coach, in real liphe influencer but not on social media, inspirer, word traveler, sexual healer, doctor of love. I really enjoyed it and as you can imagine embraced the alter-ego.
